This month’s BOM is an outhouse and will also be one of four cornerstones in the BOM Mystery Quilt. The outhouse is a pattern from Marcia Hohn’s website, www.quilterscache.com. Remember to make two: one for the BOM raffle; and one for your Mystery Quilt. If there are any questions, please call or email Marilynn Jessiman; her contact information is provided below under Option 2.
FOR PAPER-PIECING: Marcia has been gracious enough to resize the paper-pieced block to 6” finished. You can find the properly sized paper-piecing pattern at
http://www.quilterscache.com/images57/outhouse6.gif.
When you print out the pattern, make sure the “test square” in the bottom left of the pattern measures exactly one inch. If the “test square” does not equal one inch, use this formula to determine the percentage to reduce or enlarge the pattern: [1/(size of test square)] X 100 = percentage. If the “test square” is larger than one inch, you’ll need to reduce the pattern (for example, if the test square equals 1 ¼-inches (or 1.25 inches), the formula would be [1/1.25] X 100 = 0.8 X 100 = 80%). If the “test square” is smaller than one inch, you’ll need to enlarge the pattern (for example, if the “test square” measures 7/8-inch (or 0.875 inch), the formula would be [1/0.875] X 100 = 1.142857 X 100 = 114% (rounded to a whole number)).
The colors for the outhouse BOM vary slightly from what Marcia has on her block. Sections 1, 3-9, and 12 have the same colors as the original block. Section 2 should be black, and Sections 10 & 11 will be green for the guild’s BOM and Mystery Quilt. Marilynn suggests drawing the crescent moon on the door with a black permanent marker such as a Pigma pen.
FOR TRADITIONAL PIECING:
Option 1: Marcia Hohn suggests printing out or tracing the paper-piecing pattern, then cutting out the individual sections and using them as templates. You would need to add ¼-inch seam allowances to each fabric piece cut from the templates. If you traced the pattern on freezer paper, you could “iron the template on” the fabric and add ¼-inch seam allowances before cutting the pieces out.
Option 2: Marilynn Jessiman and Sharon Perry have drafted traditional piecing instructions with rotary cutting instructions as well. Marcia Hohn has asked the guild not to post those instructions here on our website. If you would like a copy of the instructions, please email your address to Marilynn, jessiman@ncctv.net, or call her at 827-3199, so a copy can be mailed to you.
